Though we are often involved in all phases of planning, execution, and evaluation of horizontal wells, our specialty is “geosteering” horizontal wells, and while at least a half-dozen other people claim to have “invented” modern geosteering, we only claim to do it better.

Besides 18 years’ combined experience, our geologists have interpreted or geo-steered roughly two million aggregate feet of horizontal wells in the United States, Canada, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia in numerous basins, many formations, for dozens of operators, in hundreds of wells.

Since no two wells are ever exactly alike, BHL Consulting always starts with the assumption that one size does not fit all. Then we adapt everything we do to the clients’ specific needs, whether in pre-drill planning, while-drilling consulting and steering, or post-drill evaluation.

Horizontal wells are drilled for one fundamental reason: to increase effective reservoir thickness. There’s not much point in drilling horizontally through just any rock that the bit happens to find.

So the whole process of geosteering, sometimes called “geo-navigation”, amounts to keeping the bit in the right rocks. In order to be maximally effective, geosteering requires more sophistication than simply looking at samples and Measured Depth MWD data. Years of experience with various computer tools intended for that purpose lead to the conclusion in that there had to be a “better mousetrap”. And there was.

The result was BORESIGHT software, designed by geologist Raymond Woodward and written by a professional programmer, Kent Davis. It is a better overall combination of speed, intuitiveness, flexibility and stability than anything else available…..at a lower cost. In service since 2004, BORESIGHT has been used to interpret over one-million cumulative feet of horizontal hole by BHL Consulting and a constantly-growing list of license holders.

BORESIGHT software is available for license on adaptable terms, is fully supported by the people who wrote it and use it every day, and is constantly undergoing improvements that keep it the most modern, effective mousetrap in the field.
